How Much Does It Cost to Run an Air Purifier? (2026 Data)

A 40-watt HEPA air purifier left running around the clock costs $63.25 a year at the April 2026 US average rate of 18.05¢/kWh. That lands it in the same always-on tier as a wifi router, but higher, because a purifier does real work: a fan motor pushing air through filter resistance, not a radio sitting idle. The number is small per hour and steady every hour, which is exactly why it adds up.

What an always-on purifier costs

Air purifiers are designed to run continuously. A unit that only cleans the air while you watch it isn't doing its job, so the honest way to price one is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At the RunWatts calculator's default 40-watt tier, that's 350.4 kWh a year.

Broken down, the draw is almost invisible at any single moment and unavoidable across a year. Per hour, 40 watts costs about 0.7¢, under a penny. Per day at 24 hours, it's 17 cents. Per month, $5.27. Per year, $63.25. Nothing about that number spikes a bill the way a space heater or dryer does. It just never stops.

For comparison, a 15-watt wifi router running 24/7 costs $23.72 a year. The purifier costs roughly 2.7 times as much because it draws 2.7 times the watts. The radio listens; the purifier moves air. That's the whole difference.

Cost by wattage tier

Air purifiers cover a wide power range, from desk units that sip 10 watts to whole-house towers that pull 200. All figures below assume continuous operation at the April 2026 US average of 18.05¢/kWh from the EIA Electric Power Monthly.

Small-room HEPA (25W): $39.53 a year. Mid-room tower (40W, the typical tier): $63.25. Large-room (60W): $94.87. Whole-house (100W): $158.12. High-output whole-house (200W): $316.24. The jump from a bedroom unit to a whole-house machine is an eightfold difference in annual cost, all of it driven by the fan size needed to move more air.

By brand, at their rated high-speed draw running continuously: a Levoit Core 300 (45W) costs $71.15 a year, a Blueair Blue Pure 211+ (62W) costs $98.03, and a Coway Airmega AP-1512HH (78W) costs $123.33. Those are worst-case figures. Most of these units idle far lower in practice, which is the next section.

Auto mode is where the real number lives

The rated wattage on the box is the top fan speed. Units like the Coway Airmega drop to their lowest setting whenever a built-in sensor reads clean air, which is most of the day in most homes. That auto behavior cuts 40 to 60 percent off the rated draw, which is why the calculator's 40-watt default sits below the 78-watt spec sheet. Price the purifier on how it actually runs, not on its ceiling.

Fan speed is the biggest lever

Nothing on a purifier moves the cost like the speed setting. The same machine at a low 20 watts costs $31.62 a year. Pushed to a high 90 watts, it costs $142.31. That's a 4.5x swing on one dial, larger than the gap between states, larger than the gap between brands. The fan is the load. Everything else is rounding.

Sleep mode is the same lever pointed at night. A purifier that runs 40 watts through the 16 waking hours and drops to a 10-watt sleep setting for 8 hours costs $47.44 a year instead of $63.25. That single overnight setting saves $15.81, about what the whole unit costs to run for three months.

The practical move is to let the sensor do the work. Run the purifier on auto so it ramps up only when cooking, smoke, or pollen actually loads the air, and lets it idle the rest of the time. A machine pinned to high 24/7 is paying full price to filter air that's already clean.

The cheapest purifier to buy can be the priciest to run

Sticker price and running cost point in opposite directions more often than buyers expect. A $60 budget purifier with no sensor, stuck at 80 watts because it has no auto mode, costs $126.49 a year to run. A $230 Coway that averages 30 watts on auto costs about $47.44. The expensive unit is $79 a year cheaper to operate.

Over three years, that gap is $237, more than the $170 difference in purchase price. The metric that matters is clean-air delivery per watt, not dollars on the price tag. A purifier that hits its CADR rating efficiently and idles intelligently pays back its premium in electricity, then keeps paying.

Hawaii costs 3.2 times Louisiana for the identical machine running the identical hours. A whole-house 100-watt unit in Hawaii would run roughly $349 a year, which is the point where fan speed and auto mode stop being nice-to-haves and start being the difference between a $90 bill and a $350 one. What actually moves the number

1. Run it on auto. The sensor ramps the fan only when the air is dirty and idles it the rest of the day. On a unit rated 78 watts, auto mode can mean an average closer to 30, cutting the annual cost roughly in half.

2. Use sleep mode overnight.Dropping to 10 watts for 8 hours instead of holding 40 saves about $16 a year per unit. The air in a closed bedroom doesn't need high-speed filtration while you sleep.

3. Right-size the room. A purifier rated for a space larger than yours hits your air-change target at a lower speed, which means a lower average wattage. An oversized unit on low often beats a correctly-sized unit straining on high, both for cost and for noise.

4. Buy for CADR-per-watt, not sticker price. The cheapest purifier with no sensor and one speed can cost more in a single year of electricity than a smarter unit costs to operate in two. Check the clean-air delivery rate against the rated wattage before you check the price.
