How Much Does a Curling Iron Cost to Run? (2026 Energy Data)

A standard 75-watt curling iron used 20 minutes a day costs $1.65 a year at the April 2026 US average rate of 18.05¢/kWh. A professional 150-watt model at the same daily use runs $3.29. A curling iron is one of the cheapest appliances in any household to operate because the wattage is modest and the runtime is measured in minutes, not hours.

Wattage by curling iron type

Curling irons and flat irons span a wide wattage range depending on barrel size, plate width, and heating technology. The wattage label on the box is the peak draw while the heating element maintains temperature. These figures come from manufacturer spec sheets and the EIA Electric Power Monthly rate data that underpins all cost calculations below.

Mini/travel curling iron: 20 to 30 watts. Small barrel, battery-assisted or compact AC heating element. Standard barrel (3/4 to 1 inch): 40 to 75 watts. This is the most common tier. The RunWatts calculator defaults to 75 watts for this reason. Professional ceramic/titanium: 80 to 150 watts. The ghd Platinum+ pulls about 150 watts. Large barrel wand (1.5 to 2 inch): 125 to 200 watts. The thickest barrels with tourmaline or infrared heating hit the top of the range.

Cost per session, per month, and per year

All figures use the April 2026 US residential average of 18.05¢/kWh and assume 20 minutes of active styling per session.

25W mini/travel: $0.0015 per session, $0.05 a month, $0.55 a year. 75W standard (typical): $0.0045 per session, $0.14 a month, $1.65 a year. 150W professional: $0.009 per session, $0.27 a month, $3.29 a year. 200W large barrel: $0.012 per session, $0.37 a month, $4.39 a year.

The per-session number

A curling iron costs half a cent to about a penny per styling session. Every common model falls between $0.55 and $4.39 a year at daily use. That's rounding-error territory on any electric bill.

The full daily styling routine

A curling iron never operates alone. The appliance that dominates a styling routine is the hair dryer, because it pulls 1,200 to 1,875 watts for 8 to 12 minutes. That single tool accounts for 80 to 90 percent of the electricity in a morning hair routine.

Curling iron (75W, 20 min/day): $1.65 a year. Hair dryer (1,800W, 10 min/day): $19.77 a year. Flat iron/straightener (150W, 25 min/day): $4.12 a year. A combined routine of curling iron plus hair dryer runs about $21.42 a year at the national average rate. Switch to a lower-wattage dryer (1,200W) or shorter drying time and the combined cost drops to $12 to $15.

The curling iron contributes less than 8 percent of a typical styling routine's electricity. The dryer is the line item. If you own both, the dryer is what shows up on the bill. The curling iron does not.

The same curling iron in different states

A 75-watt curling iron at 9.125 kWh a year costs very different amounts depending on the local rate:

Louisiana (12.44¢/kWh): $1.14. Texas (14.80¢/kWh): $1.35. US average (18.05¢/kWh): $1.65. New York (24.40¢/kWh): $2.23. California (31.01¢/kWh): $2.83. Hawaii (39.79¢/kWh): $3.63.

Hawaii is 3.2 times the cost of Louisiana for the same iron drawing the same watts. The state rates guide has the full 2026 breakdown. Even in the most expensive state, a curling iron is under $4 a year. The rate multiplier simply doesn't matter at this scale.

Why the wattage sticker feels worse than reality

A 150-watt curling iron sounds like it should cost something. The same 150 watts running 24 hours a day would use 1,314 kWh and cost $237 a year. But nobody runs a curling iron 24 hours. The key is runtime: 20 minutes is 0.33 hours. At 150 watts, that is 0.05 kWh per session, less than a penny.

This is the same duty-cycle insight that applies to food processors and pressure washers. Appliances with high peak wattage but very short runtime end up in the rounding-error tier. The wattage label describes peak demand for minutes, not sustained load for hours. A 9-watt LED bulb left on eight hours costs more per day ($0.013) than a 150-watt professional curling iron used for 20 minutes ($0.009).

What actually moves the number

1. The hair dryer, not the curling iron.Cutting dryer time by towel-drying first saves 10 to 15 times more electricity than anything you can do with the curling iron. A 1,800W dryer running 5 minutes less per day saves $9.88 a year. The curling iron's total annual cost is $1.65.

2. Forgetting to turn it off. A curling iron left on for 3 hours burns through 0.225 kWh at 75 watts, costing $0.04. That's four cents, not a bill-breaker, but auto-off models and smart plugs with 30-minute timers eliminate the risk entirely. It's a safety concern before it's a cost concern.

3. Lower heat settings. Most curling irons draw less wattage at lower temperature settings. A 75W iron on its low setting typically draws 40 to 50 watts. That saves about 30 to 40 percent of the already-tiny operating cost. The savings are real but measured in fractions of pennies per session.
